Version 4.51.191 of Slack was build with the buggy version of Electron which prevent the icon to be shown in system tray.

The issue was fixed in Electron/43.4.1.

better to downgrade a bit and update slakc with the new version only.

sudo apt install slack-desktop=4.51.180

One of the solutions I found so far was to install deprecated xfce4-indicator-plugin. Add it to the panel, start slack, then restart the panel and the icon will appear. Very interesting.

The failure chain:

Slack registers SNI
        ↓
Xfce systray calls D-Bus Properties.GetAll()
        ↓
Slack returns:
org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.Failed: error occurred in GetAll
        ↓
sn-item.c:699 treats it as fatal
        ↓
item is discarded
        ↓
no tray icon

One of the solutions from the gitlab didn't helped also: systray and indicator plugins conflict. Uninstall xfce4-indicator-plugin and ayatana-indicator-application, and it should work. https://gitlab.xfce.org/xfce/xfce4-panel/-/work_items/984
